Behind-the-Build: Lost Boys Hideout

Aaron Newman October 13, 2020

It was an absolute blast to design my interpretation of the Lost Boys’ hideout from the 1953 Disney animated movie Peter Pan. At 18” (45cm) tall—and over 1700 bricks—it’s quite a big creation, and took me more than a month to design and refine. Best of all, I opted to build and present this model as a “LEGO set,” complete with stable building techniques, play features, and a full assortment of minifigures. It just felt more appropriate to the subject material to channel some of my inner child, who loves nothing more than an exciting new LEGO kit. Like Peter Pan, I’m never growing up!

Watch the video above for an in-depth tour and exploration of the Lost Boys’ hideout, including demonstration of its play features, or read on to see detailed images and learn more about the design choices that went into this playset.

This Build is Parthenonsense

Aaron Newman August 21, 2019

I designed this scene with a friend of mine, another talented LEGO artist named Tristan. Tristan trekked north to visit me one Thursday night, and over the course of a little under three hours, we conceived of and put together what you see here! We wanted to assemble a creation that required both of our complementary styles. I specialize in fine details, the small and the clever, while Tristan’s forte is building large and implementing functionality into his work. A large-scale microscale scene with an electronic component included seemed the optimal way to showcase our strengths, so that’s what we built.

The story: an intergalactic spacecraft arrives on Earth… not in present day, or in the future, but back in ancient times. The UFO’s mission is a Wall-E-esque one: gather vegetation samples from our green planet and harvest them for alien science. Indiscriminate in their approach—or, perhaps, just totally unruffled by the presence of human civilization—the UFO has alighted on the forest surrounding a greco-roman city atop a plateau. And thus begins Earth’s first contact with extraterrestrial life!

Originally, we thought we’d build the same UFO, accidentally beaming up a dragon from a medieval European castle. As we built, though (really, as we assessed how much time we had left in our session together!) our vision evolved. Read on to learn some more about who built what, what thoughts went into this creation, and more.

Not Your Average Flower!

Aaron Newman May 29, 2019

I built this original creature as an entry into a contest on LEGO Ideas. The premise: “show us your take on a nature build with an alternative twist.” Building an animal comprised of plants was one of the first ideas that occurred to me. For my animal, I decided to build a predator—emulate a lion, or maybe a tiger—to go as much against the grain of the typical, peaceful connotations surrounding plants as I could.

God Save the King (of the Birds)

Aaron Newman February 25, 2019

I assembled this creation to imaginatively showcase the new plastic “skins” from LEGO Forma, a LEGO-produced crowdfunded product that I pledged several months ago. As soon as received and unwrapped my myriad “skin packs,” I knew that I’d want to find special ways to integrate their unique, vibrant elements in designs of my own!

The first Forma-based creation I built was this Bird of Paradise, which used the Splash Koi’s fins as its plumage. Read on to find out more about its design, as well as that of the rest of this diorama!

Tickled Pink/Tickled Coral

Aaron Newman January 24, 2019

As soon as I got my hands on LEGO set 70828 Pop-Up Party Bus, and its huge supply of bricks in coral, I knew I wanted to jump on using this new-for-2019 hue. The question then became: what would be a fitting employment of this bright, idiosyncratic new color?

The first—somewhat absurd—idea that occurred to me, which I ended up running with, was building a pink salmon. After all, I’ve never built a fish before! Read on to learn more about this silly salmon.
